Melanie Clark, MFT
It takes a lot of courage to make the phone call to begin therapy. At a time
when you're feeling most vulnerable, you're arranging to meet someone you
don't know and tell them what isn't working in your life.
So I'll describe how I work to make the process less mysterious. Right from
our first greeting, I'll be paying attention to getting to know you - who you are,
how you see the world, what your life experience has been so far. Through the
process of my getting to know you, you will be learning about yourself as you
think about the answers. We build an understanding together of what your
unique priorities are and what you want to experience in your life. The answers
to the issues you bring in will come out of our mutual exploration. If I have
suggestions, I will share them with you. But I won't have an "agenda" about
what's best for you. In the safe space of therapy, you have the chance to
expand your view of who you are, who you want to become, and how to get
from "here" to "there".
From my point of view, therapy is designed to be a safe place for you to explore
and come to your own conclusions with assistance and support from a caring
and knowledgeable therapist.
